SQE2 marking framework

Understand what the 16 stations are testing

SQE2 assesses six legal skills across 16 individual assessment stations. Twelve stations are written and four are oral. Candidates receive station-level results, while the overall percentage is derived from the station scores in accordance with the official marking and standard-setting process.

Marking and moderation: what preparation should focus on

The official SQE material includes additional explanation of SQE2 marking and moderation. Preparation should therefore go beyond memorising legal rules: candidates should practise applying the law accurately while demonstrating the required professional skill in the format of each station.

Changes applying after 1 September 2026

Updated SQE1 and SQE2 Assessment Specifications and Functioning Legal Knowledge apply to assessments taking place after 1 September 2026. The first affected sitting is October 2026 SQE2. For SQE2, a separate law criterion for Ethics and Professional Conduct applies where relevant; this does not change the overall assessment format.
